About reflux, indigestion and heartburn

Reflux, indigestion and heartburn are all common names for the same condition – reflux. Reflux is characterised by a burning pain in the left lower rib region that travels up the chest. This pain is often mistaken as being directed at the heart (hence the name ‘heartburn’), however it has little to do with the heart. Reflux pain is usually experienced after a meal.

Causes of reflux

The main cause of reflux is a musculoskeletal spasm of the diaphragm or oesophageal sphincter spasm (the muscle controlling the opening to your stomach). Reflux can also be caused by heart disease medications, persistent use of anti-inflammatory medications or stomach
disease.

Osteopathic treatment

Osteopaths will look at your neuromuscular balance (the nerve supply to your muscles) of your diaphragm and oesophagus. The best technique will then be determined, usually involving gentle pressure to your diaphragm. If symptoms persist, talk to your GP about the possible side affects of medication you may be taking.
