About rib pain
Rib conditions are characterised by a sharp stabbing pain – or a burning pain – over the chest or the side of the rib cage. This pain is often aggravated by deep breathing, coughing or sudden movements such as turning your body or lifting your arms.
Important: If you experience the symptoms above, coupled with pain in your left shoulder/ arm pain, jaw pain and/or blackouts, consult your GP immediately as you may be experiencing heart related problems.
Causes of rib pain
Rib pain is most commonly caused by lifting or pushing heavy objects incorrectly.
Osteopathic treatment
Treating rib pain will focus on aligning the thoracic spine (the portion of your spine from the bottom of your neck to the bottom of your ribs) followed by gentle manipulative techniques on your ribs. A balanced diaphragm will ensure you experience even breathing patterns through the rib cage, reducing your pain.
